Description

This is an ancient public wash house built between the 16th and 17th centuries.  It is built of square-shaped, stone masonry and it looks like the hull of a boat.  The main axis of the basin is placed perpendiculalry to the rock wall behind it and is surrounded by walls of uncertain work. Women would go there from all over the village by walking with the characteristic copper washbowls (called ‘uaccile’) on their heads.  Nowadays, part of the basin is filled-in with stony material and it is likely that the decision was taken to do this by the villagers after an evident reduction of the water flow and their own disuse of the wash house. The flow of water is currently made possible through a grating placed in the join between the two curved walls.
